Ohiwai Forest Farm is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna.  The property was once Kauri, Rimu, Tanekaha, Rata, Kahitatea, Rewarewa, Totora and Miro forest. Despite logging in the late 1800s through early 1900 it has retained many large examples of New Zealand Podocarp forest. Removal of goats and return of the birds has enabled regrowth to start in earnest with thousands of seedlings now present on the forest floor.

Native birds are returning as pest control eliminates mustelids, rats and possums. Tui, Kereru, Piwakawaka are regularly spotted and a band of noisey Kaka make the hill their home from February to October.
